There are many families who have contributed here, but I really want to thank Ray Durley who has helped me throughout on the Ing Research. I wouldn't have done this without him. Ray is no longer actively researching. I have included his notes here, and if someone has a question, please contact me directly. He is descended from Penelope Ing (who married William Durley) daughter of Joseph Ing and Elizabeth Jackson

John House has supplied his descendants

Jane Parks has provided a Jackson Family Report which is under Elizabeth Jackson wife of Joseph Ing. I set hers in a different file as her oral tradition states that Elizabeth Jackson was the wife of Alfred Ing. I have her as the wife of Joseph Ing (Jr.).

Mary Yeazell has provided me her line from Joseph Ing, son of Matthew, (son of Joseph Ing, Jr. and Elizabeth Jackson) born 1822 who married Ursula Martin.

3. CHRISTOPHER2 ING (JOSEPH1)37,38,39,40,41 was born February 16, 1758 in Virginia or North Carolina42,43, and died 1826 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina44. He married MARY WHITEHEAD45,46,47 Abt. 1784 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina48. She was born Bet. 1755 - 176549.

Notes for CHRISTOPHER ING:

Christopher Ing was the fifth child born to Joseph Ing I and his wife, Ann. His father had purchased 175 acres on the south side of White Oak Swamp in Edgecombe County North Carolina in 1768 (Edge Co. NC DB D:29). That land was given to Joseph Ing II after the father's death, and Christopher, upon coming of age, was to be given the sum of Ten Pounds Virginia Currency from Joseph II. His brother Matthew was to be likewise treated by Joseph II (Will of Joseph Ing LDS FHC Microfilm #0018853). In 1784, Christopher married Mary Whitehead Pope, the daughter of Tobias Whitehead . She had been married to West Pope who died intestate in 1784 (Edge. Co. Estates Nov. 1784). Christopher was appointed Administrator for West's Estate, and he was also the principal buyer. Among the items he acquired were bedroom and kitchen furnishings, a loom, a slay, a spindle, a plow and weeding hoes (Edge Co. Estate Records LDS FHC Microfilm 0018856).

Mary and West Pope had three minor children when West died - John, Elizabeth and William Pope. Joseph Sumner was appointed the guardian for the children (Edge Co. Court Records May Cout 1796). Unfortunately, there is a gap of from 1778 - 1820 in the Guardianship records for Edgecombe County. Joseph Sumner married Mary's sister Sarah Whitehead (Records from Bob Erwin). Whether Kindred C. Pope was the son of West and Mary is not likely since he is not referred to in West's Estate. However, Kindred is the principal heir of Christopher Ing - not his own children. Christopher refers to him as "my relation." (Edge Co. DB16:214, DB18:220).

In 1787, Christopher buys property from John Sketo (Edge Co DB4:682) and proceeds to buy further property throughout his life. The deeds I have reviewed show the property to be in the area of the south side of Swift Creek. His neighbors were Popes, Battles and Stallings originally. By 1818, Christopher deeds most of his property to K.C. Pope comprising of approximately 520 1/2 acres bordered by Elizabeth Pope and Harry Pope. Elizabeth may be one of the orphans of West now grown up.

It appears that his family relationships were difficult. Only one deed states a name of one of his children; however, in the 1790 census, there are three males under 16 with Christopher; in 1800, 1 male child under ten, 1 between 10-16 and three daughters under ten. In 1810, one son between 10-16 and three daughters 16-26. The only named child is Mary Ing the wife of Allen Robertson deceased (Edge Co. DB18:127). I, at present, believe that Jacob Ing is also Christopher's son. Christopher's brother's sons are known, and there are no sons named Jacob; Jacob was born in about 1786, about two years after Christopher and Mary's marriage, and the first deed in Edgecombe involving Jacob is between Jacob and Christopher and contains very unusual language, to wit: "To have and to hold the said land and presmises with all the other appertenances aforsaid without the least said interruption or hindrance of me the said Christopher Ing." But it adds "Christopher Ing my heirs Executors or Administrators." That language always appeared in the Deeds; I doubt it means that Jacob is not Christopher's heir (Edge Co. DB12:196).

Christopher also names seven of his grandchildren in Deeds. Mary Robertson's children were Rebekah, James W.A., Rhoda and Allen W. Robertson (Edge Co. DB12:127). Christopher's other three grandchildren were Mary Ann, Allen and Elizabeth (Edge Co. DB DB18:126). There is another deed from Nancy Ing to her children, Mary Ann, Allen and Elizabeth (Edge Co. DB18:115), but the relationship between Christopher and Nancy remains unanswered. Did she have three illegitimate children, is she divorced from John or Jacob, or perhaps is the widow of Christopher's other son who may or may not be Charles?

Christopher dies in approximately 1826, and no probate or estate of any kind occurs. Apparently he had already deeded everything he owned over to other people. I have checked both Edgecombe County and Nash County.

More About CHRISTOPHER ING:

Military service: Bet. December 1778 - February 1779, Capt. Edward Clinch's Company of Nash County Regiment50

Notes for MARY WHITEHEAD:

Ray Durley received this information re Mary Ing:

"[From] Edge. Co Estates 1761-1825

"Christopher Ing

"3. West Pope Estate.

"Summons (Nov 1784) of John Edge and Samuel Deloach to answer to Christopher Ing, admr. Petition (Feb 1785) for dower by Christopher Ing and wife Mary, formerly widow of the dec'd, stating the dec'd possessed 897a on the SS of Swift Crk and a second tract of 197a on Swift Crk. Dower allotted (March 13,

1785) consisting of 277a adj the patent line and 1/3 of 197 a adj Jesse Johnson."

She is the widow of West Pope, and Christopher Ing married her. But if this is the case, why would the orphans, presumably her children, go to Sumner for guardianship. But was she the mother of the children who were put into guardianship? West was older than Christopher, and he could have married a younger second wife if his first wife had died. So perhaps, the orphans were not her children, but the children of West's first wife maybe even related to Sumner. Some of West's children were Christopher's age.

Children of CHRISTOPHER ING and MARY WHITEHEAD are:

i. JACOB3 ING51, b. Abt. 1786, Edgecombe County, North Carolina52; d. 1869, Nash County, North Carolina53.

Notes for JACOB ING:

I believe Jacob Ing to be the son of Christopher Ing for the following reasons: 1) Neither of Christopher's brothers had a son named Jacob 2) They were the only Ing family in this area at this time that is known 3) The first deed with Jacob is between Jacob and Christopher and contains the language "To have and To hold the said land and premises with all the other appertenances aforesaid without the least said interruption or hindrance of me the said Christopher Ing" (DB12:196), 4) Jacob was born in 1786 - two years after Christopher Ing and Mary Whitehead marry, and 5) Jacob Ing was the Guardian for the Orphans of Allen Robertson whose wife was Mary Ing, Christopher's daughter, making Jacob the uncle of the orphans. [Edgecombe County North Carolina Guardianship Records LDS FHL Microfilm #1014884].

Jacob Ing never married, but he was a very busy man. He witnessed countless Wills and Deeds for relatives and friends. We was an Executor for many Wills; he was guardian to many other orphans of Thomas Dozier. He was one of many Justices of the Peace for Nash County in the years 1828-1831 1834-1842 and 1846-1852, and he was a constable in 1820 (Nash County Historical Notes LDS Book #975.647 N539 at page 54 and 56). Jacob built a water grist along with a saw mill on Swift Creek near Dortches' Bridges according to "Abstracts of Nash County Records." It further states Jacob "owned the land on the south side of the creek and Lewis Dortch, an infant, owned that on the north side. Aug. Term 1826" at page 112. Kindred C. Pope, if not Jacob's half-brother, was certainly a friend and well known to Jacob, married Martha Patsy Dortch, possibly an aunt to the infant. Jacob was the Executor for Kindred's estate in 1826 - same year Christopher Ing's death.

But for all the Wills Jacob witnessed, he forgot to have his own witnessed and court proceedings were necessary. He left his "lot and improvements whereon I now live (in Battlebon)" to his former house servant, Chaney Ing, in the form of a life estate until her death, and after her death, his estate went equally to: Mary Reynolds, wife of Benjamin Reynolds, Elizabeth Boon, wife of Jesse Boon, Selah White, wife of James White, Sally Reynolds, wife of William H. Reynolds, William C. Jones, John C. Jones, Matthew Jones also old Chaney Freed woman (formally my house servent) also Lucinda Artist (dead) to her Children if any surviving (all colored). Jesse Drake was appointed Executor, but he declined to serve. Summons were issued and Probate hearings were held to prove the validity of the Will, and apparently it was approved. Chaney Ing lived there until her death apparently in in 1873. Jacob's estate was valued at $4,500.00 at the time of his death.

11. JOSEPH3 ING (JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1)108,109 was born February 17, 1800 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina110,111,112,112, and died 1884 in Gibson County, Tennessee113. He married VIOLET ARMFIELD113 November 06, 1821 in Sumner County, Tennessee114. She was born Abt. 1800 in Tennessee115, and died 1877 in Gibson County, Tennessee116.

Children of JOSEPH ING and VIOLET ARMFIELD are:

28. i. ELI4 ING, b. 1824, Tennessee.

29. ii. JAMES M. ING, b. December 28, 1825, Carroll County, Tennessee; d. June 18, 1894, Gibson County, Tennessee.

iii. ISAAC ING117, b. 1830, Tennessee118.

iv. MELISSA ING119, b. 1833, Tennessee120.

v. ELIZABETH ING121, b. 1834, Tennessee122.

vi. MARTHA ING123, b. July 11, 1837, Tennessee124,125; d. June 22, 1882, Gibson County, Tennessee; m. JOHN SHERROLD THOMAS126.

vii. JOSEPH ING127, b. 1840, Tennessee128.

viii. ROBERT ING129, b. 1842, Tennessee130.

ix. JOHN ING131, b. 1828.

12. MARY3 ING (CHRISTOPHER2, JOSEPH1)132,133 was born Abt. 1794 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. She married ALLEN ROBERTSON134 Abt. 1810 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, and died Bet. 1820 - 1823 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

Notes for MARY ING:

Using census information, she was born approximately 1794. Mary Ing married Allen Robertson in approximately 1810, and by 1823, she was a widow with four children, all under 13. Apparently, she was also known as Polly, which occurred various times in the Ing line, as Peter Robertson leaves his daughter-in-law Polly a life estate on the property formerly owned by Allen. There is a Polly Robertson who marries Eli Trevathan on 29 July 1826 which would be after Peter Robertson's death, and the Trevathan line is certainly an acceptable line for the Ings, but at present, I am not sure whether that is the same person. Henry Bryan was the Bondsman, a man known to Jacob Ing at least.

Children of MARY ING and ALLEN ROBERTSON are:

i. REBEKAH4 ROBERTSON135, b. Bet. 1810 - 1820, Edgecombe County, North Carolina; m. HENRY WEST, January 22, 1830, Edgecombe County, North Carolina136.

ii. JAMES W. A. ROBERTSON137, b. Bet. 1810 - 1820, Edgecombe County, North Carolina. iii. RHODA ROBERTSON137, b. Bet. 1820 - 1823, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

iv. ALLEN W. ROBERTSON138, b. Bet. 1810 - 1820, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

13. UNKNOWN3 ING (CHRISTOPHER2, JOSEPH1)139 was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He married NANCY140,141. She was born Bet. 1780 - 1790, and died in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

Notes for UNKNOWN ING:

There is also a Deed showing that Henry Trevathan and wife, Mary A. Trevathan sold to Allen W. Ing land subject to the life estate of Nancy Exum (DB20-241 Deedbook 20, May Ct. 1830 - Nov. Ct. 1833 entry date January 28, 1832).

Nancy Exum is the same person as Nancy Ing, Allen's mother, as the records show that Nancy Ing marries Exum Etheldred on February 25, 1823. Perhaps this was a second marriage, or even a first, as there is no mention of a father for her children. And her last name is Ing.

Notes for NANCY:

Nancy appears to be an unusual women for her time. She buys and sells property in her own name, there is no known guardian for her minor children, and there is no father listed either. Whether she was a child of Christopher or his daughter-in-law, they had many dealings with each other and lived in the same general area. Etheldred Exum is either her first or second marriage, but it is her he married. She bought property from Christopher for $300.00 on March 24, 1817 (DB00:293). Then, on December 31, 1822, she deeds a 1/4 interest in this property to each of her children, and keeps a life estate and 1/4 interest for herself (DB18:115) This same property is deeded to Allen W. Ing by Etheldred Exum & Nancy Exum, his Wife, on January 15, 1834 for the sum of $60.00 to Etheldred and Nancy (DB21:423).

Children of UNKNOWN ING and NANCY are:

30. i. MARY ANN4 ING, b. Abt. 1810, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

31. ii. ALLEN W. ING, b. 1813, Edgecombe County, North Carolina; d. Bet. 1852 - 1860, Mississippi or Louisianna.

iii. ELIZABETH ING142,143,144, b. Bet. 1815 - 1820, Edgecombe County, North Carolina; m. DAVEY EDWARDS145,146, November 12, 1835, Nash County, North Carolina147.

14. MARY3 ING (MATTHEW2, JOSEPH1)148 was born 1805 in North Carolina149. She married ALEXANDER YOUNG150 April 29, 1822 in Franklin County, North Carolina150. He was born 1792151.

Children of MARY ING and ALEXANDER YOUNG are:

i. ELIZA4 YOUNG, b. 1825, Franklin County, North Carolina152.

Child of MARY ING and HENRY TREVATHAN is:

i. ALBERT GREEN5 TREVATHAN, b. 1837, Paris, Tennessee234; m. MARTHA YOWELL235.

31. ALLEN W.4 ING (UNKNOWN3, CHRISTOPHER2, JOSEPH1)236,237,238,239 was born 1813 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina240, and died Bet. 1852 - 1860 in Mississippi or Louisianna241. He married LYDIA WELLS242 January 13, 1831 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina243.

Notes for ALLEN W. ING:

Allen appears to leave Edgecombe County after Jane is born in 1847 but by the time he arrives in Noxubee Co., Mississippi in 1850, his wife is not with him. Whether he left because she died or for other reasons, I do not know. There is a marriage of a Mary E. Ing in Noxubee Co., in 1852. I don't know which of these that is. He is the only Ing in that County at the time. So I don't believe he had other relatives there. But which girl it would have been, I don't know, and so far, I have not found a Mary and J.J.W. Edwards in 1860 Censuses. Whether they died with the rest of the family or survived, I don't yet know. That also means that the family dies between 1852 and 1860. As Oscar Ing ends up in Bastrop, Louisianna, I'm not sure whether they died on the Mississippi River or somewhere else. I'm still not even sure it was a shipwreck.

Children of ALLEN ING and LYDIA WELLS are:

i. JOHN5 ING244, b. 1832, Edgecombe County, North Carolina245.

ii. HARRIETT ING246, b. 1836, Edgecombe County, North Carolina247.

iii. ARANINA ING248, b. 1838, Edgecombe County, North Carolina249.

iv. CHRISTOPHER ING250, b. 1839, Edgecombe County, North Carolina251.

v. AMANDA ING252, b. 1841, Edgecombe County, North Carolina253.

vi. MARTHA ING254, b. 1842, Edgecombe County, North Carolina255.

vii. OSCAR ING256, b. 1846, Edgecombe County, North Carolina256; d. June 26, 1862, Seven Days Battle around Richmond-Mechanicsville, Civil War257,258.

Notes for OSCAR ING:

Whatever happened to the Ings, Oscar also survived. He is listed in the 1860 Morehouse parish, Bastrop, P.O., , Louisianna Census as living with C.C. and Jane Perry as a Farm Laborer at the age of 13. There is another farm laborer listed - Theodora Craven age 20. Oscar is the second youngest; Jane Pernina is the youngest. He is listed on the Noxubee Census, Mississippi for 1850 with the rest of the family.

The National Archive records, of which I have a copy, reflect that Company "G" was known as the Davenport Rebels. Oscar enlisted on August 6, 1981 in Amite, Louisianna.

ALGERINE GILBERT GREEN PERKINS265,266,267, December 1870, Texas268,269; b. December 1840, Georgia270,271; d. October 04, 1903, Columbus, Colorado, Texas272.

Notes for JANE PERNINA ING:

When I visited Texas in 1981, and I met Ruby Ethel Tardiff for the only time. She not only gave me a portion of Algerine's sermon book, she also told me some things about the Ings. She had believed that Jane's entire family was killed in a shipwreck while coming to the United States and that Jane was raised by Mr. Rufus, a president of Baylor (then Waco) University. In 1983, I check with Baylor. They reviewed Rufus' biographies and could find no truth to this. There are letters between both AGG and Jane and the Burleson family. At this point, I do believe that something - perhaps a shipwreck - killed most of Jane's family. When she fills out census information she doesn't know she was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. But who raised her, I don't know. How she got from Noxubee Co, Mississippi in 1850 with her family to marrying Algerine in 1870 in Texas, I have no idea yet. I don't know whether she even knew Oscar, her brother closest to her age, survived.

The 1900 census states she had had 7 children and 6 were then living. I do not know who the seventh child was. When Vonna entered Catherine Evans' delayed birth record, she states that Catherine was the fourth child, and three were then living.

Jane became a teacher, and I have a copy of her contract for teaching.

Burial: January 1909, Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Columbus, Colorado, Texas273

Cause of Death: Heart Failure

Occupation: June 30, 1873, School Teacher274

Notes for ALGERINE GILBERT GREEN PERKINS:

AGG was born in Georgia in December, 1840. The 1850 Census has him living in Washington County, Georgia. However, the only Perkins in the 1840 Washington County Census is Jackson Perkins, and from a review of dates and marriages, he cannot be Algerine's father. Sometime between 1850 and 1870 he moves to Texas. He attended Waco University first as a preparatory student. The catalogues at Baylor start with the fifth year of the school, so I don't know if he went earlier. The catalogues note that he studied Theology, but states he was in the regular class - not a theological class. I don't know whether he graduated with a general degree or a theological degree. He graduates from Waco University (now Baylor) in 1870, and he is listed in the McLellan County 1870 Census. He's in Lee County, Texas in the 1880 Census. Both Oscar Walker and Catherine Evans' birth records are in the Giddings County Courthouse. The census information states he is a minister. He's in Colorado County by the 1900 Census where according to the Colorado Citizen Newspaper, he was not the Baptist minister which is listed in the papers. He dies 1903, so that is the last census he will be found on. In the 1880 census, he lists his job as a preacher, but by the 1900 census, he lists his occupation as farmer. Of his seven children, one dies early, and I do not have a name for that child. Oscar dies shortly after AGG.

The Washington County Georgia 1850 Census lists Algerine and Susan living with John L. Perkins John L. may be Algerine's uncle, but he's too young to be his father. No one enumerated in that household could be Algerine's father. Next door lives Virgil H. Perkins.

The 1900 census also states he has been married to Jane for 30 years. That means they were married in 1870. My last hope of finding a marriage certificate will be Falls, Marlin, Grosseback, or Limestone County. I've tried Lee, Robertson and McLennan already. Pursuant to the Colorado County Death register, Algerine died of Malarial ?. He is buried in Colorado County at the Rocky Hills Cemetary where Jane, Oscar and Susan, his mother, are buried.
