1. JAMES ANDREW1 MURDOCK1 was born 1833 in South Carolina2, and died December 28, 1914 in Rock Island, Colorado, Texas3. He married JULIA ANN B. HUDSON4,5 March 29, 1853 in Bibb County, Alabama6, daughter of JAMES HUDSON and NANCY ANDERS. She was born Abt. 1833 in Alabama7,8,8, and died October 14, 1914 in Yoakum, Lavaca, Texas9.



Notes for JAMES ANDREW MURDOCK:

James Andrew Murdock moved around a lot. According to the census information, he was born in South Carolina. He was married in Bibb County, Alabama in 1853; he joined the Confederate Army in Verona, Mississippi, originally Co. G, 41 Rg't Mississippi Volunteers which became Company "K" of the 41st Regiment on May 12, 1862, and he was living in Texas by 1880. In Texas, he lived in Milam, Lavaca, Dewitt and Colorado Counties before his death in 1914 apparently in Colorado County though there is no death certificate.



Some of the Company Muster Rolls and information from other documents are contained in his military records for the Civil War from the National Archives. In one undated "list" it states that he had a head wound, contusion, slightly, Dec. 31 186? In charge about 300 yds adance in trenchments. Another "list" states he appeared on a list of killed, wounded and missing in Chalmer's Brigade in the battles before Murfreesboro Tenn. Dec 28, 1862 to Jan 3. 1863, that he was slightly wounded on Dec 31, 1862 in 1st charge to the front. The Company Muster Roll for April 19 to June 30, 1862 and June 30 to Oct 31, 1862 state he was present and due a bounty of $50.00 in the latter. The Nov & Dec, 1862 Roll states he was "Absent. Wounded at Murfreesboro in Hospital surg. Reqt." He again was present in Jan & Feb, 1863 A later roll states that he was absent from his unit in Sept/Oct 1863 because he was "sent to hospt by Reqt surg on account of wound received in battle Chicamaga Sept 21/63" The Nov & Dec 1863 Company Muster Roll state he was "furloughed for 30 days from Tuscaloosa Ala Nov 28/63 on account of wound" but he was present in the March & April, 1863 and July & Aug, 1863 Company Muster Rolls. He was also present at Muster Roll taken in Dalton Georgia on March 31, 1964, still present March & April, 1864 and May 1 to Aug 31, 1864 though these locations are stated.



Mr. Murdock also owned lots of property in the various counties he lived in in Texas. I have copies of most of the deeds, but I'm not going to type them out here. He received one of the original land grants in Texas, and his name as well as his son John's, who also received a land grant, appear on the original land grant map for the area in Colorado County, Texas.

She was born November 26, 1860 in Kaufman, Kaufman, Texas21, and died June 12, 1947 in Brazoria, Brazoria, Texas22.



Notes for THOMAS JEFFERSON MURDOCK:

During our trip to Texas in June, 1998, Dad, Jeff, Laura and I, found out where Thomas Jefferson Murdock is buried. He is in an unmarked grave in the Oak Grove Cemetery Block 5, Lot 87. Here are deeds from both Colorado County and Lavaca County. One states that he also lived in Dewitt County. Yoakum, Texas is half in Lavaca Co and half in Dewitt. I have not checked Dewitt's records. Most of his children were probably born in Rock Island.

Marriage Notes for THOMAS MURDOCK and TEMPERANCE RAYEL:

Per the 1900 Census of Colorado Co. Texas, Elizabeth and Thomas got married when she was 11 years old, and she had Enoch shortly thereafter (1880 Census). I'm not too sure of this, but I will check into it further. By that time, she had had ten children; nine were living. I don't know who died. Arlene had not yet even been born yet. My grandmother Beatrice Murdock had also told my father that her mother had 13 children. To date, I know only of 11 children.

Clyde was hobo and a cook. He would ride a train into El Campo. The train track was about a mile from Alton's house. Clyde would stay a few days and then leave. He'd take Alton downtown. There was a band box in the park and there were concerts, Clyde and Alton would go down and listen. Clyde would get a job as a cook while travelling around the country. When he didn't have a job, he'd

make fried pies and sell them in whatever town he was in to earn money. That was his specialty. Clyde never married. He died in a sanatarium.
