If it weren't for Ruby Ethel Tardiff, I would never have started on genealogy. I am grateful to her for sparking my interest in this shortly before her death. I'm still, almost 20 years later, tracking the legends she passed on to me, but I've enjoyed it all. Val
Descendants of Susan
Generation No. 1
1. SUSAN1 was born 1820 in Georgia1, and died Bef. 1903 in Texas.
Notes for SUSAN:
The headstone at Rocky Hills Cemetery does not list a death date for Susan. She falls off the censuses after 1880.
Susan is listed on the 1850 Census, Washington County, Georgia, Sheet 242(b), and on the 1880, Lee County Texas, Vol 22, ED 93, Sheet 5, Line 5 as S.A.
She does not appear after 1880 on any of Algerine's information nor is there a Susan Perkins listed in the 1900 Colorado County Texas Census.
She is not the Susan Perkins who lived in Uvalde County, Texas. I requested a copy of the Widow's Application for a Pension (re the Civil War) for the Susan Perkins of Uvalde County, and it is definitely not the same Susan Perkins as Algerine's mother.
More About SUSAN:
Burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Columbus, Texas2
Child of SUSAN and UNKNOWN PERKINS is:
2.i.ALGERINE GILBERT GREEN2 PERKINS, b. December 1840, Georgia; d. October 04, 1903, Columbus, Colorado, Texas (Rocky Hills Cemetery).
Generation No. 2
2. ALGERINE GILBERT GREEN2 PERKINS (SUSAN1)3,4,5 was born December 1840 in Georgia6,7, and died October 04, 1903 in Columbus, Colorado, Texas (Rocky Hills Cemetery)8. He married JANE PERNINA ING9,10,11 1870 in Texas12, daughter of ALLEN ING and LYDIA WELLS. She was born June 1847 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina13, and died January 17, 1909 in Columbus, Colorado, Texas14.
AGG was born in Georgia in December, 1840. The 1850 Census has him living in Washington County, Georgia.. Sometime between 1850 and 1870 he moves to Texas. He attended Waco University first as a preparatory student. The catalogues at Baylor start with the fifth year of the school, so I don't know if he went earlier. The catalogues note that he studied Theology, but I don't know whether he graduated with a general degree or a theological degree. He graduates from Waco University (now Baylor) in 1870, and he is listed in the McLellan County 1870 Census. He was ordained a minister on September 11, 1870. He's in Lee County, Texas in the 1880 Census. Both Oscar Walker and Catherine Evans' birth records are in the Giddings County Courthouse. The census information states he is a minister. The records in the library at Giddings state that most people living in Giddings were German who were Lutherans, and there were only a few Baptists. The records do not show whether Algerine was a minister in his own church here. He's in Colorado County by the 1900 Census where according to the Colorado Citizen Newspaper, he was not the Baptist minister which is listed in the papers. He dies 1903, so that is the last census he will be found on. In the 1880 census, he lists his job as a preacher, but by the 1900 census, he lists his occupation as farmer. Of his seven children, one dies early, and I do not have a name for that child. Oscar dies shortly after AGG. So far, I find no records that AGG fought in the Civil War though he would have be 21 at the time. .
The Washington County Georgia 1850 Census lists Algerine and Susan living with John L. Perkins John L. may be Algerine's uncle, but he's too young to be his father. No one enumerated in that household could be Algerine's father.
The 1900 census also states he has been married to Jane for 30 years. That means they were married in 1870. My last hope of finding a marriage certificate will be Falls, Marlin, Grosseback, or Limestone County. I've tried Lee, Robertson and McLennan already. Pursuant to the Colorado County Death register, Algerine died of Malarial ?. He is buried in Colorado County at the Rocky Hills Cemetery which is also known as Pleasant Grove Cemetery and Iames Cemetery where Jane, Oscar and Susan, his mother, are buried.
Click here for a transciption of Algerine's sermons of which I have the originals.

Notes for JANE PERNINA ING:
Family legend states that Jane's entire family was killed in a shipwreck and that Jane was raised by Mr. Rufus, a president of Baylor (then Waco) University. In 1983, I check with Baylor. They reviewed Rufus' biographies and could find no truth to this. However, there is a letter between Jane and a member of the Burleson family, and they obviously knew each other well. There is a letter from Rufus Burleson to A.G.G. These letters are in the possession of another family member. At this point, I do believe that something - perhaps a shipwreck - killed most of Jane's family. When she fills out census information she doesn't know where she was born. Jane was certified by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, State of Texas, Austin Dec. 20 1872 to teach school. She received a Teacher's Certificate of the Third Class. She could teach Orthoepy, Orthography, Reading Penmanship, Geography, Mental Arithmetic, Practical Arthmetic, English Grammar, History of the United Sates, theory and Practice of Teaching. Ruby Ethel wrote an article about Jane which appeared in the El Campo Citizen concerning Jane's trunk which Ruby Ethel had an opportunity to see and contained Jane's wedding dress, pairs of baby shoes, black satin collar trimmed in wide black lace as well as other items. Apparently there was poetry written by Jane about the Civil War, but I don't know if any of this still exists.

6. EMMETT OAKS3 PERKINS (ALGERINE GILBERT GREEN2, SUSAN1)69 was born December 23, 1886 in Columbus, Colorado, Texas70, and died November 11, 1953 in El Campo, Wharton, Texas71. He married BEATRICE JENETTE MURDOCK72 August 14, 1912 in Colorado County, Texas73, daughter of THOMAS MURDOCK and TEMPERANCE RAYEL. She was born August 24, 1894 in Jones County, Texas74, and died July 18, 1971 in Richmond, Ft. Bend, Texas. Click here for a jpeg image of the wedding picture for Emmett and Beatrice.
Emmett was a cotton farmer at Taton. The family moved into a house on property owned by the Frem's and called it the Frem Place in about 1926 or 1927. They had horses, pigs, cows, and an old Bay Horse (a tan colored horse) called Old Buck. Alton used to lead him up to the porch steps, and then use the steps to get on him. Velma Ruth, Vernon and Alton used to ride Old Buck to school.
Emmett would use Old Buck as a pick up horse in the rodeo. When someone fell and had to be picked up in the arena while riding bulls or other horses, Emmett would use Old Buck to pick them up.
At one point, Emmett was also a prison guard. Later he became a farmer. Later again, he operated a truck - a 1928 International. He would drive it and haul to Houston and other places as an independent truck driver.
During WWII Emmett worked at Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas.
In about 1928, Emmett took the family - his kids, Aunt Stella, Uncle George and their kids - on vacation. They had a Model "T" Ford truck and put a cover over it like a covered wagon and a 1927 Ford touring car. They drove both of these to Arkansas. Every night they camped along the road. They took the mattresses off the beds from home and put them in the back of the truck and ate pork and beans and bought Knee Hi soda pop. They went to visit Aunt Vonna in Arkansas and stayed about a week. She showed them around Batesville.
